Getting started with scoring

Sailscore is really easy to use. Most of the navigation around the app is done by touching the items in the various lists or using the device's BACK button to go to the previous screen.

01

Enter the competitors

This is the first thing you need to do before creating a race series. Starting at the home screen, touch the "Enter New Competitor Details" button.

The keyboard will appear so type in the helm's name. Touch "Next" of touch on the crew field and type that in. Leave it blank for a single hander.

Use "next" or just touch each field and enter the details.

Save your entry by touching the "Save and Next" button and then enter the next competitor. After the last one touch "Save and quit".

02

Check you have all the entries

Once you have finished entering competitors you can (from the home screen) touch "View/Edit Existing Competitors" to review those you've entered. To make any changes touch the one to edit. Touch "Save and quit" to commit your changes or BACK (twice) to abandon them.

If you discover you've missed some out when you come to create a race series don't worry as you can come back and enter more later.

03

DeIeting competitors

Long press (touch and hold) on a competitor in the list to get the option to delete it. Careful when doing this as if they are already in a series then they will be removed from it. To add them back you'll need to re-enter all their results!

04

Creating a race series

From the home screen touch "Create New Race Series". You can also get here by touching "View/Edit Existing Race Series" to get to the list of series then touching MENU > Create Series.

Using the keyboard, enter the series name, how many races and the discard profile. The discard profile works the same way as in Sailwave except that the # or * character should be used between the numbers.

For example, in a series of 3 races, a discard profile of 0#0#1 means that if 1 race is sailed no results are discarded (the first zero); if 2 races are sailed there is no discard (the second 0); if 3 races are sailed there is 1 discard (the final 1).

Another example: A series of 8 races has a profile of 0#0#1#1#1#1#1#2. So if 1 or 2 races are sailed there is no discard; if 3 to 7 races are sailed there is one discard and for 8 races sailed there are two discards. If you don't enter enough numbers then Sailscore will assume the last one in teh list extends to all sailed races.

Select the type of series using the two radio buttons: Fleet series for a series of all one class or handicap for mixed class racing. This affects the information you will be entering for the results.

Touch "Select competitors". This takes you to a list of all the competitors you entered in step 1. Check the checkbox for the ones that are entered in this series. Touch "Confirm selections" at the bottom of the screen when you are done. Then on the edit screen touch "Save series". If you find you need to enter further competitors at this stage, just save the series and navigate back to the home screen then enter new competitors as described in step 1.

If you started on the home screen then you will be returned there. If you started on the series list screen you will be returned there.

05

Changing a series details

You can go back to the series information screen at any time and make changes. From the series list, touch the one to edit. A tabbed view appears with two tabs. Touch MENU > Edit series info to go to the details for the series and make any changes you want. It's likely you will want to add or remove competitors. Touch "Select competitors" and add or remove checkboxes as required.

Take care: Any results entered for competitors you are removing will be deleted. But the competitors remain in the database and any other series they are in are unaffected.

06

PUtting in the results

From the tabbed view of a race series you have a choice of entering results by competitor (touch the competitor to see a list of races) or by race - touch the "Enter by Race" tab and touch a race to see a list of competitors.

For an explanation of the result codes and scoring procedure refer to the current Racing Rules of Sailing.

This is where the difference between a Fleet and a Handicap series is seen.

Fleet series

There are three fields available for each result. The Finish position should be entered for any straight finisher in the race. If the result was a DNC, DNF, etc, touch the pull-down and select the code you want. All races default to DNC until a valid finish position is entered.

If a RDG code (redress given) is to be entered it is important that the actual finish position is entered too. This is because the other boats' finish positions mustn't change and having a missing result prevents the app from working that out (RRS A6.2).

Handicap series

In a handicap race you need to enter finishing times instead of positions. It is important that all competitors have a PY value entered in the database so that calculated corrected times are accurate. You can go back and add them if you forgot or didn't know them at the time. A default value of 1000 is used if you didn't enter one.

There are up to 8 fields to complete for each result but for a normal finish only the finish time is mandatory. Enter the minutes and seconds in the respective fields. If you have several starting flights in a race then you will need to enter the start time as well. Enter the starting minutes (normally it will be a multiple of 5 minutes) and leave the seconds blank unless you have a strange approach to spacing your flights!

If a competitor didn't complete the full number of laps of the leading boat then enter the actual laps and number sailed by the lead boat. The app will calculate the pro-rata finish time from that.

Result codes and redress are entered in the same way as in a Fleet series. Remember to always enter a finish time if one was recorded.

07

Viewing the scores

Once all the positions or times are entered touch "Save results" to commit everything and return to the race or competitor list.

If you have entered the results for all competitors and all races touch MENU > Score series to view a screen with the calculated points and ranks.

You will see the competitors displayed in finishing order for the series with total points and net points after discards. Under each competitor you will also see a list of the individual races as scored by the app. Each list is shown something like this:

R1:(DNC, 3.0), R2:1, 1.0, R3:2, 2.0

This means for race 1 the result was Did not compete which scored 3 points (starters +1); for race 2 the result was 1st place scoring 1.0 points and for race 3 the result was 2nd place scoring 2.0 points.

If there are tied places then the normal rules apply as described in RRS Appendix A. i.e. ties in a a single race share the points (you will see fractions of points allocated) and ties in a series are separated by listing each competitor's races in order and splitting at the first difference or on the last race if still tied.

08

Exporting a series

From the series (tabbed) view touch MENU > Export raw data or Export scored series. The difference is explained below.

This will immediately take you to a list of other apps on your device that can handle file output. Most often you will want to either save it somewhere (e.g. a Google drive folder) or email the file to someone (or yourself). Touch the one you want and follow the steps to complete the export. The file will be named <series_name>.csv and will follow standard Comma Separated Value format. Sailwave or Excel will import such a file easily.

A note on what is exported:

If you selected raw data then the output will omit the ranked finishing positions and total and net scores and races will not be marked as discarded where this would normally apply. The intention here is that the positions and times as entered can be used in Sailwave (or any other calculation program) to produce the results.

If you selected scored series then the scoring rules will be applied (if not already done so) and the fully ranked results output with discards marked and total and net points after splitting ties and so on.

There is one known situation where data exported will not import into Sailwave without some manual intervention. This is when redress has been given to a competitor and the data required to compute the resulting points comprises the actual finish position and the redress finish position. The actual being required to calculate the relative positions of the other boats and the redress position to award points to the competitor. The text in the export resembles an illegal result code in Sailwave but contains all the information to manually enter the finish position, correct RDG result code and redress points. You will need to do this in Sailwave after the import but before scoring the series in Sailwave.

If there are any discrepancies between Sailscore and Sailwave scored results then please tell me about it! I've done a number of tests to look for differences and follow RRS Appendix A to the letter but there could be things I've missed.

09

Finally - deleting a series

You won't often need to do this but to remove a series completely from the device touch MENU > Delete series.

Careful - all results are deleted permanently by doing this. Competitors are retained though so any other series they are entered in are unaffected.
